5 ways to save on car hire in the USA

Alexandra Grenier June 26, 2026 Comment this post

The car is often the best way to discover the United States at your own pace. However, the advertised price is not always the price you will pay: insurance, drop-off fees, or options can quickly drive up the bill. Here are 5 tips to save on your car rental in the United States.

1. Book as far in advance as possible

If we had to give you THE ultimate tip, it would be not to wait until the last minute to book your car.

By analyzing our travelers' bookings, we found that in 2026, a rental car was booked an average of 132 days before departure, or about 4.3 months in advance (Authentik Canada 2026 booking data). For over 12 years, this average has consistently remained above 100 days.

What this statistic shows us is that anticipation is essential, both to benefit from the best availability and the best rates. If you plan to travel during the busiest periods, such as summer school holidays or long weekends, it is even more important to book in advance!

Busy Periods Demand Level Our Advice
Spring Break (March-April) 🟠 High Book 4 to 5 months in advance.
Summer (June to August) 🔴 Very High Book as soon as your dates are confirmed.
Long Public Holidays 🟠 High Plan your booking several months in advance.
Thanksgiving 🟠 High Book as soon as your itinerary is set.
Christmas and New Year 🔴 Very High Availability decreases rapidly.

Authentik Tip: Keep an eye out for major promotional periods, such as Black Friday or seasonal offers. Also, remember to subscribe to newsletters so you don't miss out on new features or great deals for planning your road trip.

2. Compare airport and downtown locations

Picking up your car directly at the airport is convenient after a long flight, but it's not always the most advantageous option.

The rental price depends on many criteria, including the city, season, vehicle category, and car availability. Depending on the case, an agency located downtown might be cheaper… but the opposite is also possible.

Pick-up Location What to Know
🛬 Airport More convenient upon arrival and generally more vehicle choices. However, specific fees might apply.
🌆 Downtown Can sometimes be more economical if you spend a few days in the city before your road trip. Agencies sometimes have a more limited fleet.

→ We advise you not to pick up your car too early. If you first spend a few days in New York, Boston, Chicago, or San Francisco, use public transport, then pick up your vehicle when you leave the city to start your road trip.

By picking up your vehicle only when leaving the city, you could save:

  • several days of rental
  • parking fees, which are often high in city centers
  • and some of the costs associated with urban traffic

3. Check one-way rental fees

A one-way rental involves picking up your car in one city and returning it in another. Very practical for a road trip, this option can, however, incur drop-off fees.

The amount of these fees varies according to several factors:

  • the rental company
  • the distance between the two agencies
  • the vehicle category
  • the season
  • car availability

When your itinerary allows, a loop road trip, returning to the same city, is generally the most economical option. You will most often avoid drop-off fees while benefiting from a wider choice of vehicles.

4. Choose a car suited to your itinerary

The cheapest vehicle isn't always the best choice. To choose well, consider the number of travelers, luggage, but also the kilometers you will cover and the desired comfort during your road trip.

Your Situation Recommended Vehicle
Couple with little luggage Compact or intermediate
Family with 2 children Spacious sedan or compact SUV
Several suitcases or bulky equipment Intermediate SUV or minivan
Road trip in the American West Compact or intermediate SUV

For a two or three-week stay, a slightly more spacious car can make long journeys much more enjoyable. Conversely, a vehicle that is too large will often be more expensive to rent and to drive.

Before booking, also check:

  • trunk volume
  • number of seats
  • included equipment
  • traveler reviews

5. Pay attention to insurance and options

At the rental counter, several insurances and options may be offered to you. Before accepting, take a few minutes to check what is already included in your reservation.

Specifically, check if you are covered by:

  • your credit card
  • your travel insurance
  • your personal car insurance
  • your rental agreement

The most frequently offered options are:

  • GPS
  • additional driver
  • child seat
  • roadside assistance
  • supplementary insurance
  • prepaid fuel

In our comparator, each offer details the insurances, included options, as well as any exclusions. Take the time to consult this information before booking.

→ Bonus tip: find out about electronic tolls

If we were to give you one last tip, it would be not to wait until you are there to discover how American tolls work.

In several states, such as Florida, Texas, California, or parts of the Northeast, many highways now operate with electronic tolls. You can therefore use a toll road without stopping or paying directly.

Depending on the rental company, fees are then automatically billed through a transponder installed in the vehicle or by reading the license plate.

Before you leave, we simply advise you to ask your rental agency how tolls are managed with your vehicle. If you book your road trip with Authentik, your travel advisor can also explain this system to you based on your itinerary.
