Although it is often necessary to make difficult choices of itineraries and activities, this "American dream" can easily be traveled over 3 weeks given the quality of the American road network, the reliability of the almost new vehicle offered for rental and the accuracy of the road book that was waiting for us at the hotel, including a pre-loaded GPS, which was very much appreciated.

Almost all of our stages will leave us with fantastic memories, including Yosemite, Brice Canyon, Monument Valley, not to mention a memorable flight over the Grand Canyon at the end of the day. Regarding the Cities visited, San Francisco and Las Vegas are our favorites. in front of the bubbling immensity of Los Angeles..;

A few drawbacks however:
- despite booking 9 months in advance in "comfortable" hotels, we almost always ended up with hotel rooms whose views were not enchanting. (Ex: view of the logistics parking lot in Bryce, view of the boat launching parking lot at Lake Powell, view of a blind wall in Los Angeles, etc.) it's really a shame.
- Be careful, the GPS is often preloaded with the "classic" routes and risks making you miss the superb panoramic routes proposed in the paper road book. We have therefore sometimes decided to turn around over great distances in order to take these essential roads. We therefore believe that it would be more appropriate for these scenic routes to be recorded directly in the GPS, leaving the choice to some customers to reschedule direct routes.
- After visiting the parks, the stages of Kingman and Pismo Beach seemed to us of limited interest, apart from the fact of cutting the weekly distances. Monterey or Carmel present better options in our opinion.

During our journey, we started on the Pacific coast (San Francisco, Monterey, Los Angeles, San Diego), before heading inland via a section of Route 66 to reach Kingman. Then head to the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Lake Powell, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Las Vegas, Death Valley, Mammoth Lakes and finally Yosemite.
Traveling with 6 people, including 4 teenagers, the opinions are unanimous, namely a superb trip. On the other hand, we are not all of the same opinion concerning the favorite destinations. Some preferred the Grand Canyon, others Yosemite or even San Francisco or Las Vegas, the advantage of this roadtrip being precisely the diversity of the places visited. Nevertheless, we all agree that flying over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter is one of the best memories! A must not miss!
Moreover, among the options offered by Authentik, we had taken the tour of San Francisco on foot (with a really adorable and top-notch guide who knew how to interest the whole family), the visit to Alcatraz, the entrance tickets for the Universal Studio in Los Angeles (to do, very appreciated by teenagers), the flight over the Grand canyon in a helicopter (to do absolutely), the 4x4 tour of Monument Valley (interesting with a nice guide), Antelope Canyon (place magnificent, but too touristy compared to the size of the place…).
Regarding the hotels, these were on the whole good and the swimming pool present in most of them was very appreciated in the evening to cool off after a day of travel. Only downside, the Death Valley hotel: Stovepipe Wells Village. Apart from this place, all the other hotels were ok, if not very good.

We often arrived around 7:00 p.m. or later at the accommodation with a busy day in our paws. We had to force ourselves in the morning so as not to leave too late and again arrive too late at night.
The roads are very nice. The quality of the pavements is remarkable almost everywhere! Paradoxically, it is in the big cities that the roads are the worst. The driving times are only more pleasant. Only roads a little chaotic: access to the village of Bodie and the unavoidable course of Monument Valley but it can be done with a standard car. We had a Nissan Rogue (actually the equivalent of the Qashqai in France).
Driving in the US is pretty easy. Apart from a few specificities (especially for turning right at traffic lights), the rules of conduct are identical to those in France. The absence of right-of-way makes driving easier. I found the drivers very cool. Courtesy is essential!
We had not rented a GPS but used that of the mobile phone without encountering any difficulties.

Yosemite Park is extraordinary, the various waterfalls are breathtaking, not to mention the steep and scenic roads that lead to it.
Then it was the Sequoia park, very impressive by the height of the trees and the quantity of forests crossed; to see: General Sherman and Tunnel View.
Death Valley is grandiose, it's a different painting every 10km but what a furnace, even in June! You have to prepare for it, the Authentik advice is not too much for your health or for the vehicle!
Then a stop in Las Vegas. After these few days spent in immensity and calm, Las Vegas is multicolored and grandiose! To see once in a lifetime!
The most impressive in size and color was Grand Canyon where we stayed for 2 days. The evening excursion with sunset with "Pink Jeep" is a good compromise to enter the park and see different points of interest with a guide (8 per car).
From Grand Canyon to Barstow there are 600km and it takes a full day, especially after many stops on route 66. When taking this road, you have to be careful because there are many sections that are still passable but poorly maintained. A stop in Oatman is essential, what a change of scenery! And for Bagdad Café die-hards, the cafe still exists and we had the chance to speak with the owner Ms. Pruett.
Then Palm Springs is an oasis in the desert, it's very pretty, the city is calm, it's a relaxing stopover.
From there we went down to San Diego to stay there for 2 days. Very pretty harbor and beautiful Balboa Park. Mission Beach allowed swimming, it is the only place on the coast where it was not too “cool”.
Los Angeles is an impressive city: we stayed there for 3 days which allowed us to visit the Warner Bros. studios, it takes about 3 hours on site. And then there are all those typical Venice seasides, Santa Monica and the hills of Beverly Hills.
From LA, we headed back along the coast for a stop at Pismo Beach on the Big Sur Scenic Byway. I don't know of any other similar route in France. The panoramas are breathtaking, at each turn the ocean or the rocks have different colors. I would add a personal opinion. This road is however quite impressive because it is very winding, overlooks the ocean a lot and does not have parapets everywhere. The driver must be constantly vigilant also because of many stops and restarts of other vehicles at unauthorized places. But that being said, it is to be done and multiplying by two the expected time. In San Simeon, at a “vista point”, amazing sight of elephant seals.
Monterey was our last stop before returning to San Francisco. It's a nice quiet little town, with a nice beach.
For a long trip like this, where we traveled 4200 km, you have to make a good choice for the following 2 things: choose an SUV category vehicle that is comfortable and holds the road well and do not hesitate to choose hotels of minimum comfort 3 stars in order to be able to rest comfortably and have room to open your luggage. Only downside for hotel reservations, that of San Francisco: the King Georges: room more than tiny for 2 adults with luggage for 3 weeks, old-fashioned and not very comfortable… even if the hotel is central and facing the Dollar rental .
About the car we chose Dollar. No unpleasant surprises, on the contrary we had a top-of-the-range vehicle in the chosen category. Driving in the United States is relatively easy and the drivers on the whole quite respectful. The lanes, even of the smallest streets, are almost always double. The entire circuit can be done without taking toll roads, all roads and highways are very wide and very well maintained. You should always have a full tank to the maximum, on some roads like those leading to Death Valley or Big Sur, there is nothing for tens of kilometers! Also no wifi or store sometimes. The GPS provided by Authentik was programmed to us with all our destinations and excursions!
