What is the ESTA authorization?
The ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a mandatory form that you must complete online when planning a trip to the United States. It is known as an electronic travel authorization.
It allows you to travel to the United States without a visa, as part of the Visa Waiver Program.
All French, Belgian, or Swiss travelers must have this electronic authorization before boarding the plane. Otherwise, chances are high that you’ll be refused entry by American customs.
How much does the ESTA cost in 2025?

The cost of the ESTA is currently 21 US dollars. However, an increase is planned as of September 30, 2025, with a new estimated price of 29 US dollars. It is therefore advisable to apply before this date if possible. The amount is payable online, during the application, by credit card, Visa, MasterCard, or Amex.
The fees must be paid online, only via the official ESTA website: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/
Warning: many unofficial sites charge extra fees, sometimes very high. Stay vigilant and only use the US government website.
Where and how do I apply for an ESTA?

The only way to get your ESTA is to go to the official US website.
- Go to this official link: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/
- Fill out the online form with your personal and travel information
- Make sure your passport is biometric and valid
- Pay the fee by credit card or PayPal
- You will usually receive a response within 72 hours (often faster)
Keep your application number and, if possible, print your authorization or save it as a PDF.
Other websites offer the service but none of them are recognized by the US authorities. I strongly recommend the official site above.
How far in advance should you apply for the ESTA?

You must apply no later than 72 hours before your entry into the USA, but I advise you to do it as soon as you are planning your trip, especially if you are traveling during busy periods (summer, school holidays, etc.).
When filling out the form, be sure to enter your EXACT name, as stated on your passport. This is essential; we have too often seen travelers panic after being refused entry for this reason.
Also, the passport number you provide online must absolutely match the 9 alphanumeric characters on your passport, in this format: 12AB34567.
How long is the ESTA valid for?

An ESTA authorization is valid for 2 years from the approval date, or until your passport expires if that happens first.
It allows you to make multiple trips to the United States, as long as each visit does not exceed 90 consecutive days.
If you have already had an ESTA authorization and it has expired, you must apply for a new one online. Of course, you will have to pay the fees again.
What are the requirements to get an ESTA?

To be eligible for the ESTA, you must:
- Be a citizen of a country that is part of the Visa Waiver Program (including UK, Australia, Germany, Spain, Japan, China, etc.)
- Hold a valid biometric passport
- Travel for tourism, unpaid business, or transit
- Not stay for more than 90 consecutive days
- Arrive in the United States by air or sea only
ESTA does not allow you to work, study, or settle permanently in the USA.
What are the other requirements to enter the USA?

The ESTA authorization is not enough to enter the United States. Upon arrival, you will have to pass through customs control.
Agents may ask you to show:
- Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, address of a friend or relative)
- A return or onward ticket
- Proof of sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay
Answer any questions simply, clearly, and honestly.
What mistakes should you avoid when applying for the ESTA?

- Applying at the last minute
- Using an unofficial site (often much more expensive)
- Providing false information in the form
- Exceeding the maximum authorized stay (90 days)
- Forgetting to check the validity of your passport
- Working or studying without the appropriate visa
If you fail to follow these rules, you may be refused entry, even if your ESTA is valid.

Please note that the information above may change without notice. Now, all that’s left is to wish you a wonderful trip to our country, America.
