When preparing for their USA RV road trip, many visitors ask whether they need an international driver's license to rent their RV in the U.S.

We won't let the mystery hang too long: the short answer is no.

In fact, you just need to have a valid regular driver's license from your home country to ren an RV for your USA tours.

Here are the two conditions to meet for your license to be accepted here:

1-  It must use the Latin alphabet.

2-  Principal and additional drivers must have had their driver's license for at least 12 months.

You must be at least 21 years of age (and no more than 75) for RV rental in the United states, and have a credit card in your name for the deposit.

In addition, please note that drivers from 21 to 24 years of age may be required to pay an additional fee to cover the higher insurance cost.

Also note that the driver's license of the principal driver and the credit card used for the deposit MUST be in the same name.

An international license is required.  

You will also need to show your passport when picking up the vehicle.

Every year, many disappointed travellers are unable to find a rental RV for their USA RV road trip, because there are none available.

The RV vacation is a highly popular form of travel and demand exceeds supply, particularly in high season.

If you want to rent a vehicle in July or August, which is peak tourist season, you will need to book early (at least six months in advance). Bookings begin up to 1 year in advance. This is particularly true for California road trip.

Furthermore, the earlier you book, the better the price will be. Rental prices tend to increase each week, as availability decreases. 

You can always try booking at the last minute, but there is a good chance that you will not find any vehicles available. And if you do manage to find one, you are almost certain to pay a high price.

RVs are generally easier to rent for the months of May, June, September and October. However, the fact remains that prices are lower the earlier you book your self-drive holidays. 

Most suppliers ask for a 30% deposit to confirm your booking.

Early booking = Big savings

Naturally, the summer is the best time to get the most out of your RV rental during your USA road trip.

Peak season for a U.S. RV road trip is from early July to Mid-August. RVs are in high demand at this time.  

This means that availability is extremely limited. If you plan to travel in July or August, be sure to book your vehicle at least six months ahead of time. And the earlier you book, the better the price. 

You should also be aware that there are many more travellers on the roads in July and August. For example, don't be surprised if you get stuck in traffic on California's legendary Highway 1 during your California road trip!

June and September are pleasant months for RV travel because the weather is good, there are fewer tourists and rental prices are more competitive.

Early October is relatively calm on the American west coast, as there are fewer tourists, making it easier to meet the locals. However, the nights can be quite cool.

Travel to Florida is a bit of an exception, as RV travel is enjoyable there all year round.

The following charges will apply if you cancel your RV rental booking:

• FREE cancellation up to 72 hours after booking
• 72 hours after booking to 46 days or more before departure: 20% of the total rental cost
• 45 to 15 days before departure: 50% of the total rental cost
• Less than 15 days before departure: 100% of the total rental cost

One-way rental fee (if applicable) is payable in full, 72 hours after your reservation.

For your RV rental in Las Vegas or elsewhere in the U.S., child car seats must meet NHTSA Federal Safety Standards.

If your seat meets these standards, bring it! It’s free to bring on the plane and your child will be as comfortable as at home.

Child car seats with an ISOFIX or LATCH system are authorised by RV rental companies and the government.

If your seat does not have a LATCH/ISOFIX system or it is not certified FMVSS, you will not be covered by the rental company's basic insurance or additional insurance options .

In that case, you will need to rent a car seat with your vehicle. This option will be payable in advance or at the rental office, depending on the rental company.

Note that not all rental companies offer this option.
