One thing is for sure: returning from the United States without a souvenir is almost an achievement.

Between baseball caps, Route 66 signs, products unavailable in Europe, and beloved finds discovered along the way, there's no shortage of opportunities to fill your suitcase.

We reveal our favorite souvenirs to bring home after your trip to the United States.

Iconic Souvenirs from the United States

Some souvenirs have the power to instantly transport you back to the atmosphere of your trip. Sometimes, just a glance at a cap, a pair of cowboy boots, or a Route 66 plate is enough to conjure up images of the vast American landscapes and the miles traveled on the country's roads.

Here are the most iconic souvenirs to bring back from the United States.

Clothing and accessories

More than just a souvenir, a t-shirt or a cap often allows you to proudly display the places you were lucky enough to discover during your trip (and make your colleagues a little jealous).

Among the essentials:

  • A cap in the colors of an American city
  • A university sweatshirt from Harvard, UCLA, or Yale
  • An I Love NY t-shirt
  • An item of clothing featuring a national park you visited

Easy to wear every day, they allow you to extend the spirit of the trip long after returning home.

Authentik Testimonial: "In my opinion, the best souvenirs are often the simplest: a typical item like a cap or a t-shirt from a visited national park. It's the kind of souvenir that tells a story and instantly plunges you back into your trip." Myriam, USA Specialist

A sports souvenir

It's impossible to talk about the United States without mentioning their passion for sports. Baseball, basketball, American football, or hockey: every city pulsates to the rhythm of its team and proudly displays its colors.

Even if you don't know the rules of baseball or American football, it's hard to resist the atmosphere of a stadium or the enthusiasm of local fans. Caps, t-shirts, jerseys, or hoodies are sold everywhere and make very popular souvenirs.

Bringing back an item in the colors of your destination's team is also a great way to maintain a connection with the visited city. After all, how many people can say they attended an NBA or NFL game during their vacation?

Why we love it: A simple cap bought during a vacation can sometimes turn into a real new sports passion once you're back home!

The Western and Cowboy universe

Cowboy boot store
During your visit to the American West, you won't be able to miss the cowboy hat and boot stores.

If there's one symbol that instantly evokes the American West, it's the cowboy. Even if not all Americans wear a hat every day, the legacy of the Wild West is still very much alive in many states like Texas, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, or Montana.

Western shops are also full of typical American souvenirs:

  • A cowboy hat
  • A pair of western boots
  • A massive belt buckle
  • A Western-style shirt
  • Decorative items inspired by ranches and the Wild West

Authentik Testimonial: "Whether you're a rodeo fan or just looking for an original souvenir, these items perfectly embody the imagery of the American West. The question remains whether you'll dare to wear your cowboy hat once you're back home..." Mélaine, Marketing Coordinator

Decorative items inspired by road trips

The United States is the kingdom of the road trip. It's therefore not surprising that you can find a multitude of souvenirs inspired by the great American roads, national parks, and iconic destinations of the country.

Among the most popular souvenirs:

  • A Route 66 plate
  • A decorative license plate
  • A magnet representing a visited state
  • A national park sticker
  • A mug or glass with the emblem of an iconic destination
  • A retro item inspired by Coca-Cola or American diners

These souvenirs have the advantage of being easy to collect and allow you to keep track of the regions crossed during your trip. The only risk in all of this is that your refrigerator might eventually run out of space for your magnets after a few road trips!

Authentik Testimonial: "I love hunting for magnets and stickers. In my opinion, these are not-too-expensive souvenirs that we are sure to find in every state. I put the stickers on the RV and the vehicle, and it reminds me of all the wonderful places I had the chance to visit." Susyane, USA Specialist

American Gourmet Souvenirs

If there's one area where Americans excel, it's treats. Between surprising flavors, XXL sizes, and products unavailable in Europe, it's hard to resist temptation.

Whether you have a sweet tooth or simply enjoy culinary discoveries, you'll easily find something to please your loved ones... or discretely fill your cupboards upon your return.

Typically American sweets

It's impossible to talk about gourmet souvenirs without mentioning the famous American sweets. Supermarket shelves are full of products sometimes unavailable in Europe, often in surprising flavors.

Among the essentials:

  • Reese's peanut butter cups
  • M&M's in their many exclusive flavors
  • Pop-Tarts
  • Twinkies
  • Marshmallow Fluff
  • Limited edition Oreos
  • Salt Water Taffy candies, very popular on the American coasts

These little treats have the advantage of taking up little space in luggage and often make a great impression on loved ones upon returning from the trip.

Authentik Testimonial: "The souvenirs I often recommend are sweet treats! The USA knows how to be very original: peanut butter M&M's, Reese's, marshmallow fluff, etc. Treats to share with your friends and family upon your return." Adeline, USA Specialist

Regional specialties

Beyond the sweets found all over the country, some states are known for their local specialties. This is often an opportunity to bring back a more original gourmet souvenir directly linked to the regions visited.

Among the most popular products:

  • Texas BBQ spice blends
  • Barbecue sauces from the Southern United States
  • Vermont maple syrup
  • Georgia pecans
  • Cajun and Creole blends from Louisiana
  • Artisan hot sauces from the American Southwest
  • Biscuits and dessert mixes typical of the South

These products often allow you to extend the trip once you're back home. Sometimes, a recipe or a smell is all it takes to instantly immerse yourself back in your vacation.

Authentik Testimonial: "Some states are famous for their agricultural products, like Californian wine, Georgia nuts, or Vermont cider. I also like to prioritize souvenirs made locally or from recycled materials. In addition to bringing back a unique item, you are directly supporting artisans and small local businesses." Alexia, USA Specialist

American drinks and spirits

The United States produces much more than giant sodas and takeaway coffee. Some regions are renowned for their wines, spirits, or craft beverages, which make excellent souvenirs for those who enjoy culinary discoveries.

Among the essentials:

  • A bottle of Kentucky bourbon
  • A Tennessee whiskey
  • A Californian wine
  • A wine from Washington State or Oregon
  • A bottle of artisanal Bloody Mary mix
  • Typically American cocktail mixes

These products allow you to extend your trip during a meal with friends or a special occasion. And unlike a decorative souvenir, they rarely have time to gather dust on a shelf!

Good to know: Alcoholic beverages must be transported in checked luggage if their container exceeds 100 ml. Also remember to properly protect the bottles in your luggage to avoid unpleasant surprises upon arrival.

Local and handcrafted creations

Beyond classic souvenirs, the United States also abounds with artisanal creations that tell the story and culture of the visited regions. This is often an opportunity to bring back a unique item, far from standardized souvenir shops.

Native American craftsmanship

Native American craftsmanship is among the most authentic souvenirs you can bring back from the United States. Each piece often reflects the know-how and traditions of different indigenous nations.

attention emoji Attention: many souvenir shops sell mass-produced imitations. To be sure you are buying an authentic item, prioritize shops run by Native American communities, cultural centers, or local artisan markets.

Among the most popular souvenirs:

  • Silver and turquoise jewelry from the American Southwest
  • A dreamcatcher
  • A wooden sculpture
  • A piece of traditional basketry
  • A work of art or a decorative objectIn addition to bringing back a unique souvenir, you directly contribute to supporting local artists and communities.

Authentik Testimony: "By visiting Native American shops and choosing local crafts (dream catchers, jewelry, paintings or decorative objects), you will leave with a unique souvenir full of history." Virginie, USA specialist

Creations by Local Artisans

If your idea of the perfect souvenir isn't limited to a magnet or a t-shirt, take the time to step into artisan markets and small local shops. You'll often find original creations there that you won't see anywhere else.

Depending on the regions visited, you may discover:

  • Handmade pottery
  • Locally made jewelry
  • Decorative objects
  • Original posters or postcards
  • Creations inspired by American landscapes
  • Works of art by local artists
  • Products made from recycled or sustainable materials

Each piece tells a story and often reflects the identity of the region where it was created.

Good to know: Artisan markets are often the best places to find truly unique souvenirs. If you spot an object you like, don't delay too long: there may be only one copy.

Souvenirs to Extend the Journey

Once the suitcases are unpacked, there are still many ways to extend the journey. Books, music, or souvenirs for children allow you to find a bit of the American atmosphere in your daily life.

Books and Beautiful Books about the United States

Some souvenirs can be a bit heavier in the suitcase, but allow you to extend the journey for years. This is particularly the case for novels, beautiful photo books, or works dedicated to American history and culture.

Depending on your interests, you can bring back:

  • A novel set in the visited region
  • A beautiful book about American national parks
  • A work on the history of the American West
  • A regional cookbook
  • A photo book dedicated to a city or a state

It's also an excellent way to discover the United States from another perspective once you return home.

Why we like it: some books have this magical power to instantly transport you back to the American roads, even from your couch.

Barnes & Noble
To immerse yourself in the country's culture, there's nothing better than reading!

Music and American Culture

It's impossible to talk about the United States without mentioning its cultural influence. From New Orleans jazz to Nashville, Tennessee country, including rock, blues, or hip-hop, each region has its own musical identity.

Bringing back a vinyl, an album by an artist discovered on the road, or a souvenir related to the local cultural scene is a great way to maintain a connection with the places visited. It's also a souvenir that stands out from the classics and will particularly appeal to music lovers.

After all, some American cities are discovered as much with the ears as with the eyes.

Good to know: Some destinations have even become iconic thanks to the artists who were born there or had their careers there.

To Spoil the Children

We couldn't forget the children in this article! They too have the right to treat themselves to beautiful souvenirs, or be spoiled if you travel without them. The United States offers a multitude of gift ideas for little travelers.

Plush toys, illustrated books, miniature yellow buses, typical fire trucks, or souvenirs from Disney World and other emblematic attractions: there's something for all tastes and all ages.

Enough to extend the magic of the trip a little... or make a few happy upon return!

Why we like it: If they are young, children may not remember their trip as much as you do, but they will remember where their favorite new stuffed animal came from!

Our 3 tips for choosing your souvenirs well

Faced with all the temptations found in the United States, it is sometimes difficult to know which souvenirs to bring back. Here are some tips for making the right choices and avoiding purchases you regret once you get home.

What to bring back depending on the region visited?

The United States is an immense country and each region has its own identity. If you are looking for a slightly more local souvenir, here are some ideas based on the places visited during your trip.

  • In the Northeast United States: New York souvenirs, books on American history, Vermont maple products, objects inspired by iconic universities or handcrafted creations from New England.
  • In the South and Florida: Cajun and Creole spices, Kentucky bourbon, Disney or Universal souvenirs, Florida citrus products, objects related to the music of Nashville, Memphis or New Orleans.
  • In the American West: authentic Native American crafts, national park souvenirs, objects inspired by the Wild West, cowboy hats, vintage Route 66 posters or creations by local artisans.

Which souvenirs can be brought back by plane without problems?

Most of the souvenirs mentioned in this article can be transported without difficulty in your luggage. Clothes, books, decorative objects, plush toys, jewelry or solid food products are generally allowed in carry-on or checked baggage.

For liquid or semi-liquid food products such as certain sauces, spreads or beverages, the usual rules apply: in the cabin, containers should generally not exceed 100 ml. Beyond that, they will have to travel in checked baggage.

If you are bringing back alcohol, also remember to check the quantities allowed by the airline and the customs rules of your destination country.

Good to know: regulations can change. Before your departure, always check the official information from your airline as well as the customs regulations of your country.

What are the best places to buy souvenirs in the United States?

The United States is full of places to find original souvenirs. Beyond classic tourist shops, several options allow you to find more authentic or representative objects of the visited region.

Depending on what you are looking for, here are some good addresses:

  • National park stores for clothing, posters, water bottles and souvenirs related to the American wilderness.
  • Indigenous shops and cultural centers for authentic Native American crafts.
  • Local artisan markets for unique creations and products made on site.
  • Independent bookstores for novels, beautiful books and works dedicated to regional history or culture.
  • Large bookstores like Barnes & Noble for their vast selection of books and cultural souvenirs.
  • Supermarkets for food specialties, sweets and local products at low prices.
  • Outlet stores for American brand clothing and accessories.
  • Official stores of sports teams, museums and tourist attractions.
  • Liquor stores and specialty shops for regional wines, bourbons and other spirits.

Authentik Tip: take the time to step out of the shops located right next to tourist attractions. The best finds are often hidden in small local shops and markets frequented by locals.

Whether you're looking for local delicacies, decorative objects, handcrafted creations, or iconic souvenirs of American culture, there's no shortage of ideas for bringing a little piece of the United States home in your suitcases.

The main thing is to choose souvenirs that will remind you of the landscapes, encounters, and highlights of your trip. After all, the best souvenirs are often those that tell a story.

And as Véronique summarizes very well:

"Bring back a souvenir that you think represents the United States well. We all have our own image of this country and you will surely find what you are looking for!" Véronique, USA specialist

excuse me but are you suggesting people steal license plates? Because outside of buying one for your american car, thats the only way to get them. Thats the registration for the car and can cost the owner hundreds of dollars. You can be arrested for stealing them.

Hi Bernadette,
We are of course referring to the souvenir licence plates that are found in souvenirs or antique shops, not the ones on people's cars!
Have a nice day :)
