Why travel to the United States in 2026?

Between the pull of wide open spaces and ongoing political tensions, many of you are questioning whether now is the right time to travel. Within families, opinions are divided; among friends, the topic often sparks debate.

In this article, I share 10 reasons why you should still allow yourself this journey into the heart of America’s vast landscapes in 2026.

1. Despite the headlines, little has changed on the ground

A travel experience just as smooth as ever, despite media noise.

In the media, the United States is often reduced to political statements, inflation, and economic tensions. In reality, for travellers, very little has changed, particularly in regions that are used to welcoming visitors.

To remember: From a traveller’s perspective, the experience remains much the same as it was a few years ago. While the economic context has some impact, travelling in the USA is still smooth and truly unforgettable.

2. Fewer tourists means a real opportunity

Legendary parks almost just for you.

The boycott movement towards the United States has also affected travel. Since 2024 to 2025, fewer travellers have taken the leap.

For those who do go, this creates a genuine opportunity:

  • The great national parks of the American West are noticeably quieter than usual.
  • You can explore Bryce Canyon, Zion, Arches or the Grand Canyon in a calm, almost intimate atmosphere.
  • Taking photos becomes easier, without crowds or long waits.
  • Campsites and lodges are more readily available, even at short notice.
  • The overall experience feels smoother and more personal.

3. Route 66 marks its 100th anniversary with year long celebrations

Route 66 as you've never experienced it, between myth and celebration.

The centenary of Route 66 is set to be a major highlight. First opened in 1926, this iconic route reaches a symbolic milestone in 2026.

Rather than a single event, celebrations will take place throughout the year. From Illinois to California, towns and local communities are embracing the occasion to celebrate their heritage and bring the spirit of Route 66 back to life.

To remember: It is the perfect moment for lovers of wide open spaces and freedom to finally experience the United States and follow in the footsteps of the Route 66 legend.

4. Price increases remain manageable

Travel smart, without blowing your budget.

It is true that travelling to the United States is becoming more expensive, but there are still plenty of ways to keep your budget under control.

  1. Choose your travel dates carefully depending on the season
  2. Plan your itinerary wisely to make the most of your time
  3. Book as early as possible whenever you can
  4. Mix higher end accommodation with more budget friendly options
  5. Include free activities and parks in your plans
  6. Be strategic with food by opting for included breakfasts or planning picnics
  7. Keep an eye on fuel prices using local apps, or fill up in more rural areas
  8. Consider fuel efficiency when choosing your rental vehicle
  9. Pick an appropriate US mobile plan to avoid unexpected charges
  10. Look out for Authentik USA offers and promotions, and speak to an advisor for tailored advice to suit your budget

Good to know: Airfares have risen noticeably, particularly due to higher fuel prices this spring. However, this remains relatively minor compared to the overall cost of the trip (see the breakdown on our dedicated page about fuel in the USA). Our advice: avoid changing your ticket, as this may trigger additional fuel surcharges.

5. Hospitality remains as warm as ever

Warm encounters, typically American.

The United States has long been known for its welcoming approach to travellers. With fewer visitors around, accommodation hosts, guides, activity providers and others in the tourism sector are often even more attentive and pleased to welcome you.

A nice bonus: Whether you are a French speaking European or Canadian, your accent almost always sparks curiosity and friendly exchanges in the United States. It is something we see time and again on the ground and it has not changed.

6. The Football World Cup will be a standout event

The United States will host the Football World Cup this year alongside Canada and Mexico.
The event promises to be exceptional, taking place across several iconic cities. For a number of weeks, the country will come alive with the energy of football, offering a unique mix of atmosphere, celebration and cultural discovery.

To remember: It is a fantastic opportunity for both sports fans and travellers to combine unforgettable matches with a road trip, and to experience the USA in a truly special atmosphere.

7. The USA remains a safe and accessible destination

Explore the United States with peace of mind.

Let’s be clear, everyone wants to travel with peace of mind. The good news is that the United States remains a destination where you can travel safely and enter the country without major difficulty. We have had hundreds of travellers exploring the USA over the past year, and everything has gone smoothly.

  • Border controls remain straightforward: They may seem intimidating, but in practice they are no longer than before. Social media is not being checked, and officers remain formal but consistent with what travellers have experienced in the past.
  • ICE is not visible: While this agency has raised questions due to recent media coverage, it does not operate like regular police and is not something travellers encounter.
  • What you will actually experience are the cities, national parks, open roads and iconic landscapes that welcome millions of visitors every year.

8. Travel spending directly supports local people

Every dollar spent supports faces, not systems.

According to an IFOP study shared by Le Routard this year, nearly one in two French people (46%) say they do not want to travel to the United States. Among them, almost 60% point to presidential politics as the main reason.

With that in mind, one important point is worth remembering. The money you spend on your trip does not go to a political group. It goes directly to the people who make your journey memorable:

  • the hotel owner
  • the guide
  • the shuttle driver
  • the travel advisor
  • the restaurant owner
  • the boat captain
  • the park ranger
  • and many others

9. The United States celebrates 250 years of independence

Experience a historic moment, 250 years of American independence.

In 2026, the United States marks a major milestone: 250 years of independence. This symbolic anniversary will be celebrated across the country with a wide range of events, from cultural programmes to commemorations and public festivities.

To remember: It is a unique opportunity to experience American history from a different perspective, in a lively and immersive atmosphere, and to visit the USA during a truly special year.

10. Choosing connection over boycott

Form your own opinion of the United States, beyond the clichés.

Some travellers want to “send a message” by avoiding the United States, often as a political stance.
At Authentik, we see travel differently. Travelling can be a powerful way to connect, to understand, and to engage with a culture beyond the headlines.

That said, the choice is always personal. If travelling to the United States feels uncomfortable in the current context, it may affect your experience, so it is worth taking the time to decide what feels right for you.

Authentik testimonial: A country is not defined by its politics alone, but above all by its people. I encourage travellers to discover this side of America, which has so much to offer. Simon Lemay, Co founder of Authentik

Ultimately, the real question may not be why travel to the United States in 2026, but rather why not. With more favourable travel conditions and a number of unique events, this year represents a rare window of opportunity.

Travel is also about looking beyond perceptions, seeing things for yourself, meeting people, sharing experiences, and feeling something real. The United States has not lost its ability to inspire, to surprise, and to create lasting memories, whether you are travelling as a couple or with family.

So if the desire is there, follow it. The wide open spaces are waiting.

We have decided not to visit the US because of the volatile political situation and visa fears.
My husband is not white and I don't want him taken into custody by ICE.
Sorry, but I'd rather stay safe and free.
